Sustainability

We are working to fulfill Bridgestone’s global corporate social responsibility commitment.

Sustainable Rubber

Bridgestone takes a broad view of sustainable natural rubber, which includes addressing not only deforestation, but also labor rights, land use, water use, and water quality. In February 2018, Firestone Liberia launched its Global Sustainable Procurement Policy that serves as a framework to also achieve our goal of products made of 100% sustainable materials by 2050. This policy extends beyond natural rubber and applies to all our procurement activities.

Bridgestone is also a founding member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber, an independent platform to lead improvements in the socio-economic and environmental performance of the natural rubber value chain.

Environment

Environment

Much of the investment Firestone Natural Rubber makes is to ensure the future of the country’s natural rubber industry. Efforts include supporting farmers through best-in-class training and techniques. Firestone Liberia also provides ongoing farm advisory support, farm supplies and materials at cost, and other support to the Liberian rubber industry.

At an estimated cost of USD $2 million, Firestone Liberia provided 5.6 million free natural rubber stumps (planting material) to 2,100 Liberian rubber farmers in an effort to help revitalize the country’s natural rubber industry devastated by the prolonged civil wars. This assistance has resulted in the replanting of an estimated 25,000 acres of rubber trees by private Liberian rubber farmers.

The company’s commitment to the environment is reflected in the comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP).

First established as part of a 2005 agreement with the Government of Liberia, the EMP continues to serve as Firestone Liberia’s daily guide for enhanced and improved environmental stewardship, as well as for safe and environmentally sound operational practices.

Sustainable Commitment

Sustainable Commitment

Firestone Natural Rubber is committed to promoting the fundamental human rights of Liberians, supporting local surrounding communities, and protecting and preserving the local environment. Firestone Natural Rubber prioritizes efforts aimed at improving the health and welfare of its teammates, their dependents and surrounding communities with actions that include education, health services, the provision of quality drinking water, and continued rebuilding from the devastation wrought by the prolonged civil wars.

In line with Bridgestone’s global corporate sustainability commitment, Firestone Liberia works to have a positive and lasting social and environmental impact in the communities where the company operates. In alignment with this responsibility, Firestone Liberia has been enhancing education, and healthier and safer communities in the country over the course of the company’s 95-year presence in Liberia.
