Firestone Speeds Up Massive Renovation at Duside

HARBEL, Liberia, West Africa (September 28, 2007) - Firestone Liberia is currently hard at work in the Duside community outside of Harbel where massive renovation efforts of damaged housing units for medical personnel are ongoing.

Medical authorities of Firestone Liberia say the current initiatives are part of the overall rehabilitation process of the 300-bedroom Duside medical facilities that were badly hit by the 14-year prolonged civil war that ravaged the entire country.

These housing units for doctors and nurses that were completely devastated during the course of the past civil upheaval are gradually being restored to their pre-war status for occupancy by medical personnel when the facilities of the Firestone Medical Center are relocated in Duside.

Some nurses are already occupying completed housing units in Duside Village. Other units, for medical department personnel, are being massively renovated by a crack team of engineers and technicians from the engineering department.

During a brief visit to the Duside community, it was disclosed that a medical doctor has taken residence in the area.

Some engineers and technicians spoken to during the visit revealed that they were doing all they can to ensure that renovation works on the Duside medical facilities and housing units are completed.

Meanwhile, residents who have been visiting an out patient department (OPD) set up by the medical department in the completed portion of the Duside Hospital have hailed Firestone for the speedy manner in which the renovation process is being carried out.

They also viewed the setting up of an out patient department at the Duside Hospital though still under renovation, as a commendable idea; stressing that the OPD is ideal in terms of location and has become very serviceable to the Duside community and its environs.

Moreover, the Firestone Hospital receives over 9,000 patient visits every month. In addition, Firestone Liberia is partnering with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and UNICEF to store and administer vaccines that help protect Liberians from a range of diseases. The hospital also works with the Ministry of Health for the control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Farmington Health Center in Division 28, which constitutes a part of the Firestone Health Services, continues to be fully utilized in the health interest of employees and their families. Children, mothers and pregnant women as well as women of child bearing age are being immunized at that facility on a weekly basis.
