LINDEVCO Official Commends Firestone Liberia

HARBEL, Liberia, West Africa (October 12, 2006)-Firestone Liberia has been commended for providing housing contracts to Liberian-owned and operated construction firms in the country.

The commendation was made recently in Harbel by Anthony Bindah, Project Manager of the Liberia National Development Corporation (LINDEVCO), during a status assessment report on the housing construction at Division 40 Old Camp.

He said his company was extremely delighted to be part of the housing construction program being undertaken by Firestone Liberia, which is geared towards improving the living conditions of its dedicated employees and families throughout the concession area. During the briefing, Bindah disclosed that six housing units are nearing completion and are expected to be turned over to Firestone Liberia shortly.

He further revealed that construction work has already begun on four additional housing units, commencing with the digging of the foundation level. Bindah said that his company is up to the task, but was beset with problems ranging from the high cost of lifting materials from Monrovia and other challenges, including the rainy season.

He was optimistic, however, that his dedicated workers, drawn from the local communities, will meet the deadline. Bindah used the occasion to applaud Firestone for providing the opportunity for several unemployed youths to participate in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged facilities within the concession area.

It can be recalled that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in August of this year dedicated the first batch of newly constructed housing units for employees and their families residing in Division 40 Old Camp.

According to Firestone Liberia Public Affairs Manager G. Rufus Karmorh, Firestone has completed 337 new housing units to date, and the construction of another 180 is in progress. The Public Affairs boss further disclosed that the first wing of the company’s hospital in Duside, which was totally looted and destroyed during the civil war, is now reopened and functioning as an outpatient clinic. “The completion of this hospital’s renovation will help us serve the medical needs of our community and the larger Liberian society,” Karmorh noted.

The construction of similar modern housing facilities is currently taking place in Divisions 9, 13, 14, 26, 37, 41, 42 and 43, among other areas.
