Brick by Brick: The Business of Rebuilding Liberia

A Different and Better Course

2010 Surgical MissionThe team was exhausted last night after a day of surgery that began about 7 a.m. and ended near 10 p.m. Many cleft lips and palates are being worked on as well as some hernias, cysts and other tumors. Dr. Kofi Boahene worked for almost seven hours on a young man with a large tumor that had grown on his jawbone. The surgery turned out great and it will undoubtedly change his life. The repairs on the young children's cleft lips are turning out particularly beautiful. I was standing 6 feet from a baby in post-op and could not tell she had just undergone that surgery.

Most of these children will never remember their surgery day or know the names of the surgeons, nurses, lab workers and other people who set their life on a different and better course, but I will remember them always.
