Brick by Brick: The Business of Rebuilding Liberia

Celebrating the Reopening of Duside Hospital for Inpatient Care

The reopening of Duside Hospital as an inpatient care facility marks a major milestone for Firestone Liberia and illustrates how far the company and its employees have come in helping to rebuild Liberia. Duside was severely damaged during Liberia’s civil war; Firestone and its employees have been working to rebuild the facility since 2005 when the fighting stopped. The hospital currently has 105 adult beds, 30 pediatric beds and three infant incubators, with the ability to increase to 300 adult beds. The hospital is staffed with more than 100 health professionals. The facility partners with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health to store and administer vaccines that help protect Liberians from a range of diseases.

I am pleased that I was able to be in Liberia today to mark the occasion with VIP guests including President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield. Thank you to everyone who made this day possible!
