Brick by Brick: The Business of Rebuilding Liberia

Water Treatment Facility Now in Operation

Firestone recently constructed a state-of-the-art, multimillion-dollar water treatment facility on its property in Liberia. Factory process water is now processed through equalization and clarification tanks and into constructed wetlands for final natural, biological treatment.

Firestone worked with the Liberian Environmental Protection Agency and Dr. Robert Knight, the foremost environmental wetlands expert in the world, to build the facility and develop the process. This type of water treatment system is unparalleled in Liberia.

Firestone gathers analytical data weekly and visually samples strategic points along the treatment stages to confirm excellent water quality leaving the wetlands.

Firestone also regularly samples the water in the adjacent Farmington River (even though process water is not discharged into the river) in addition to locations throughout its new treatment system to ensure compliance with recognized water quality standards from other rubber-producing countries, as prescribed in its 2008 agreement with the Government of Liberia.
