Brick by Brick: The Business of Rebuilding Liberia

President Sirleaf Visits Firestone's Rubberwood Operation

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf visited our new rubberwood processing factory located in Division 16 of Firestone's farm on Wednesday, July 23. While at the factory, the President noted the value that her administration, along with Firestone, is bringing to the country.

On behalf of the company, I presented President Sirleaf with a pen made out of Harbel rubberwood. Rubberwood is a value-added, ecologically sustainable product created from rubber trees that are no longer capable of producing latex due to age. Rubberwood is a durable hardwood used in furniture and flooring around the world.

The production of rubberwood required a significant additional investment in our Liberian operations and is creating approximately 500 new jobs in a nation with an unemployment rate estimated at 85 percent.
